The following are examples of the various services provided.

CONSULTATION

Have the inkling of an idea but need a sounding board to plan it out? Or maybe you have an early draft but are looking for an outside perspective on where your story could go?

What do I do?

  • Assist in development of plot outline/story arc and characters
  • Coach chapters as written
  • Troubleshoot predictable conclusions and ares of concern
  • Ask quite a lot of questions

READER’S REPORT

Perhaps you’re looking for feedback, but you aren’t looking for someone to move your paragraphs, highlight trouble areas, or insert comments.

What do I do?

  • Compose a one to two page written report detailing overarching impressions of style, plot, characters and their development, pacing, etc.

In other words, after reading your manuscript thoroughly, I consider all the kinds of things listed for a developmental edit below but without explaining each and every instance in its context. While some details may be given, feedback will generally be broader reflections and summarized.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

It’s time to fine tune that manuscript. Let’s turn on the Microsoft Track Changes function and have some fun.

What do I do?

  • Identify opportunities for improvement, offer suggestions in plot and character development
  • Evaluate goals, language, voice, pacing, style, description, consistency and offer ideas for addressing problem areas
  • Offer specific solutions to identified issues
  • Ask questions of the author that allow for a deeper/alternate exploration of the story-world
  • Provide an editorial letter with general thoughts, ideas, questions, and evaluation
  • Remain contracted for further consultation and edits for a total of 10 business days (starting from initial receipt of manuscript; request further details about scheduling)

BASIC COPY EDITING

Need your story to be checked for those pesky typos and missing commas? Please note: spelling and grammar will be assessed by an American wielding The Chicago Manual of Style.

What do I do?

  • Check spelling, capitalization, and punctuation
  • Identify repetitive words, phrases, and sentence structure
  • Identify and/or correct word misuse, pronoun confusion, adverbs for elimination, run-on sentences, incorrect verb tense, etc.
  • Identify instances of “telling” rather than “showing”
