I admit that the plot, though full of tragedy and magic, was not what got me to read this one. The Story of Kullervo is an intriguing chance to peek inside Tolkien’s mind and imaginative writing process. I feel a little sneaky reading it, like I wandered into someone’s office and nosily started reading whatever was lying about or obnoxiously snooped over the writer’s shoulder. The temptation was just too much to pass up.
