The first hints of coming spring (and autumn) are usually what make me miss living in my small hometown. I miss being where a three to five minute drive from the courthouse will land you in the country. I miss the bike rides and walks that were easier with less traffic. I miss the space between things. I miss watching large expanses of gray turn to brown then green. I even miss the occasional gravel road … sometimes.

Pippa’s walk through the English countryside is certainly more poetic than my childhood ambling, but joining in her wanderings brings on the nostalgia just the same. Is Where My Wellies Take Me… a beautiful introduction to poetry for children or a picture book for adults? Both. It’s perfect to stare at for hours with a cup of tea and wonderful to share with the kid who peeks over your shoulder to ask what you’re reading. The story mixed with classic poetry is an engaging, peaceful adventure, but the illustrations and design make my fingers itch to hold it. This is the kind of book that begs to be taken along for a hike and wouldn’t mind a splash or two of mud.
