WYR: What’s Cookin’, Good Bookin’?

Some weeks I’m itching for a good mystery. Others I’m craving an emotional roller coaster. Or fantasy. Or historical fiction. Or goodness knows what. It might be brand new or something ancient or anywhere in between. In any case, it’s nice to share, so …

What’s Your Read?

Okay, yeah, the blog post title is lame, but the novel is very much not.

The School of Essential Ingredients isn’t one of those delicious novels sprinkled with recipes throughout. Oh no, it describes the concoctions in far more dangerous, intoxicating, and distracting ways while not wasting time on proportions or names. I will be spending the entire book longing for the divine smells and tastes Erica Bauermeister wields as sweet (and savory) instruments of culinary torture. (Granted, this all makes it harder to hunt for a recipe when you have no idea what to call it. For the love of Google, tell me what that orangey-creamy-spicy-chocolatey miracle was that Lillian poured in her mother’s coffee. Please, Internet, please!)

Lillian’s class meets the first Monday of each month in the kitchen of her restaurant. Everyone who attends is looking for something different or might not even be aware they’re looking for anything at all, which makes the absence of recipes all the more appropriate. Like I said, hard to know how to search if you don’t know what you’re searching for. Much better anyway to learn the basics and experiment until discovering whatever it is that’s been missing.
